    November 2010 District Release Day

The New York State Council on the Arts has awarded a planning grant to the non-profit organization GlobalWrites which is partnering with The Wappingers School District. The project will be based at Van Wyck Junior High and involve a group of teachers seeking to integrate performance-based poetry with the use of videoconferencing technology. In addition, a group of undergraduate student-artists form Bard College will be working with teachers and students to teach performance techniques. A 2010-11 school year plan of action and timeline is being developed for the poetry slam.

On May 24th a group of teachers participated in a retreat held at Norrie Point Environmental Center. They put together a plan to pilot writing activities developed by GlobalWrites. It engages students in a three-step writing and performance process.

A follow up session was held in November of 2010 to obtain training on the Global Writes teaching methods and discuss the creation of a district poetry slam. The group also talked about the possibility of being involved in future grants. On April 8, 2011 the teachers met with the Bard artists and worked out a schedule for when they would work with students.
The 2010-2011 school year was exciting in many ways. We had a wonderful experience with the Bard College Artists as they worked with our students. You can check out the videos of their work with the students on our Teachers and students meet with the Bard artists page. A number of teachers were able to complete poetry projects. Leo Glaser's 6th grade students made I-Movies.
